These faults were down to the connections between the car and the iDrive system, but later models use a different set-up that should be more reliable. If one takes a look at the actual read me file, it references several different software versions inside the software update package, so you have to actually look and see which set of numbers corresponds when the version your car uses. The system did the same thing that Mike saw, telling me there was an update but not being able to be applied.
